Third-eye (pituitary) chakra

You don’t have to be a Reiki practitioner to take care of your energy body, which is comprised of meridians and chakras.  Meridians are the energy pathways that pass through at least one vital organ and help that organ’s functionality in some way.  Chakras are referred to as “energy centers.”  Today we will talk about the sixth or THIRD-EYE CHAKRA.  This specific blog series will continue every other month until we have discussed all the seven chakras in sequence.

The third-eye chakra is located between the eyebrows and just above the bridge of the nose. Biologically speaking, this chakra corresponds to the pituitary gland. The pituitary’s main function is to regulate the body’s entire grandular system by secreting hormones that affect growth, blood pressure, protein synthesis, and digestion, etc. It also impacts our ability to bond with others and experience the essence of connection. The third-eye chakra is considered the place of intuition and insight, which involves connection to subtle energies. This higher wisdom would not be accessible without the roles of the other chakras discussed. For instance, early childhood experiences settle into our root and sacral chakras. These imprints forge a sense of individuality that is our unique expression in the world (solar plexus and throat chakras). Both our heart and third-eye chakras help us transcend this illusion of a “separate” sense of Self. Specifically, our third-eye chakra contains an intuitive sense that helps us observe synchronicities and achieve a greater sense of connection with spirituality, nature, and universal wisdom. Additionally, the third-eye chakra makes it possible to tune into subtle energies that ordinary senses cannot perceive. This includes information extending beyond the dimensions of space and time, telepathy, psychic experiences, and a sense of deeper knowing.

Many people have a very active third-eye chakra, but experience it as “closed.” There are many philosophical and spiritual teachings regarding the healing, or awakening, process, which includes journeying through the veils of illusion that act as barriers to our energy body. I find that psychotherapy often addresses this chakra, specifically modalities that focus upon heightening awareness and finding meaning within difficult circumstances. Chances are that if you are reading this and currently on a healing quest, your third-eye is opening and seeing the world quite differently as a result!

These two exercises are designed to help open your third-eye (summarized from Donna Eden’s book, Energy Medicine):

  1. Place your middle finger at the bridge of your nose and push up slightly, breathing deeply and imagining you are opening the eyelid. Imagine light moving upward from your root and through the second, third, fourth, and fifth chakras. It bends at the heart chakra and then shoots straight out of your third-eye.
  2. Focus upon deep inhales and exhales for a minute. Raise a question and direct the inquiry from your third-eye chakra down to your root chakra. Let the energy of the question settle into the root. Then call up the light and direct the energy back into the third-eye. Be open for any piece of information, visualization, or sensation to reveal itself as you focus upon the physical space of the chakra (between both eyes).
